Mum’s Day celebrated with a run and a laugh Monique Bergman While many mums were tucked up receiving breakfast in bed on Mother’s Day, some were out hitting the pavement hard and having fun in the annual Jennian Homes Mother’s Day Five Kilometre Walk/Run. Around 650 people competed in the event which saw competitors run or walk around a five kilometre loop course that started and finished at the Jennian Homes complex in Champion Rd. The race, which began in Nelson in 2009, has now gone nationwide with over 5000 competitors from around the country involved. The event is open to women of all ages and fitness levels and not only sees them joining together and getting active on Mother’s Day but delivers a serious message too. Heart disease is the single biggest killer of New Zealand women, claiming the lives of over 3000 ladies each year. Simon Collett, owner of Jennian Homes Nelson Bays, says they have partnered up with the Heart Foundation to support its Go Red for Women campaign, which aims to help stop our women dying prematurely of heart disease. “It is about creating awareness of heart disease and encourages women to look after themselves and keep fit and healthy,” says Simon.

Police say it appears that the thieves had taken the stolen car on a big joy ride before setting it on fire. There were tyre marks around the riverbed and land surrounding the car. Police brought in a dog handler to

try and find any evidence but the fire had damaged the car so badly that there “wasn’t much” there. Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade chief, Ralph Lonsdale, says the fires weren’t particularly difficult to put out because they were isolated, but the smoke was quite toxic and firefighters needed to take care. Slow internet speeds in parts of Nelson are being put down to a movie-streaming service, according to a national expert. TrueNet Broadband performance expert, John Butt, says Nelson is experiencing a similar slow-down to many other parts of the country. He says he is putting this down to the recent uptake of Netflix in New Zealand after it was launched on March 24. Netflix allows subscribers to watch movies and television shows via the internet, clogging up the network. John says, nationally, Netflix could account for 25 per cent of all internet traffic, a huge

increase from nothing a month ago. “The ISPs [internet service providers] would have had to forecast that, for any ISP 25 per cent in traffic is a massive increase. I think the chances of knowing it would be 25 per cent would be very, very slim.” TrueNet has ten “probes” in Nelson which measure the percentage change in speed between the best and worst speeds. Two of those probes have dropped dramatically in speed over the past month, with one Nelson probe dropping from 100 per cent in March to 62 per cent in April. Richmond man Nick Rose uses Spark ADSL broadband and is experiencing a “quite limiting” connection.

He says Spark is blaming the reduced speed on its own Lightbox video service, which is similar to Netflix. “I did the speed check on the Spark site and it was ridiculously low. I gave them a ring and the lady then told me that between 8pm and 10pm lots of people were experiencing a slow-down due to the uptake of Lightbox and the network can’t cope with it.” Marleen Suy is one of the directors of Petes Lemonade in Kaka, Tapawera. She says she has always experienced slow broadband speeds in the area with speeds sometimes below what is expected with dial up. She says there is nothing that can be done by their ISP.

An evening fundraiser to celebrate survivors of breast cancer and to spread the word about how important it is for women to get regular mammograms will be held next week. Breast cancer survivor Melanie Horncastle, from Brightwater, decided to host the Pink Ribbon event to raise funds for the cause and to educate women about getting a regular mammogram. She is encouraging everyone to come along, especially those who have a connection to breast cancer. A supper will be served at the Wanderers Rugby Club and the bar will be open during the evening. Goods donated by the local community will be raffled during the night with all funds raised going to the Pink Ribbon Foundation. In 2013, Melanie went for a regular mammogram and cancer was detected, she had a breast reduction and lumpectomy to remove it. In August last year, she was told the cancer had returned and she went through a double mastectomy. “If I hadn’t gone for a regular mammogram, I wouldn’t have found it as I couldn’t feel the

I want to spread the word that just because you can’t feel it doesn’t mean its not there,” says Melanie. Around 3000 New Zealand women and 20 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Most will survive five years or longer if the cancer is detected early enough but tragically, more than 600 women die of the disease in New Zealand every year. As well as community events, many smaller Pink Ribbon breakfasts will be held in our region over the week. Waimea

Pink triple layered sponge cakes, cup cakes and pink sugar will be served to invited guests. The Pink Ribbon Supper will be held at the Wanderers Rugby Clubrooms from 5pm to 9pm on Friday May 22, tickets cost $10 per person. Suburban Club: The Nelson Suburban Club has seen a 24 per cent rise in membership figures since September 2014. General manager Rob Finlayson says “the key to a successful and sustainable club has always been in increasing our membership base and I’m really pleased with the steady growth we’ve achieved since September last year.” The increased membership numbers come on the back of a reported $221,000 profit for the 2014 financial year. The new recycling bins that will be delivered to houses in Tasman next week.

Around 17,000 properties in the Tasman District are set to receive a new 240 litre recycling bin from next Monday. The larger bin is being introduced to the recycling route as part of a recycling service designed to reduce landfill waste. Existing blue crates will still be able to be used for glass only with the new yellow-lidded black bins being used for paper, cardboard, cans and plastic.

Rubbish will be collected weekly with recycling collected on a bi-weekly basis. The service will start on June 29 with no increase in cost. Bins will be allocated to each specific address with a unique number and address printed on the side. An information booklet and a collection calendar will be included under the lid. The new bins should not be used until June 29.

Heavenly road cone: A road cone has been placed on top of the flag pole at the top of the Cathedral’s tower. Reverend Nick Kirk says he was notified on Monday about the cone and believes the tower was climbed externally. “I think they’ve gone up the outside which is obviously dangerous.” He says Cathedral staff are in discussions about removing the cone. Cliff strengthening: Around 220 rock anchors, 1660m2 of ‘shotcrete’ and nearly 1400m2 of mesh will be used as part of strengthening work on the Rocks Rd cliff face over the next six months. NZ Transport Agency says areas of highest risk will be addressed first with a focus on stabilising the rock face. Battling with chronic fatigue a tough road Simon Bloomberg

Two Nelson women suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome want to promote a better understanding of the illness that affects an estimated 20,000 New Zealanders. CFS or ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) as it is also known is a debilitating chronic illness characterised by profound fatigue that cannot be improved by rest and is often worsened by physical or mental activity. It has a number of symptoms that includes weakness, muscle pain, impaired memory, mental concentration, sensory overload and insomnia, to name but a few. Although CFS sufferers Penny Sturrock of Richmond and Jasmine Nicholson-Mooney of Spring Grove say the disease can make life misery, they “don’t want pity, just want understanding”. And that’s why they have chosen to talk to the Waimea Weekly about their illness as part of International ME Awareness Day on Tuesday. “A lot of people don’t understand the illness and say ‘you are just tired’ but that’s like saying a depressed person is just sad,” Jasmine, who has suffered from ME

Britten’s bike secrets revealed The world-famous Britten bike had its insides revealed on Monday night at an event which drew technical junkies and Britten fans alike to NZ Classic Motorcycles. Manager John Shand says, after a surprise reveal in March there had been a lot more interest in the bike. “There were a hell of a lot at the reveal. When we pulled the cover off you could hear the air being sucked out of the room,” Monday evening featured talks

about John Britten’s life from his widow, Kirsteen Britten, as well as a demonstration of the inner workings of the bike by Nelson man Jason Monopoli, a member of the engineering team that built the bike. “It was a garagey evening, a world first, the top had never been taken off the bike in public,” John says. Jason says looking under the bodywork lets people witness a sight not commonly seen outside the pit area. “It’s a side of Britten that people

Locals off to Nepal, Wednesday, April 29: The locals off to Nepal this month are thrilled with the quiz night they hosted on May 7. With just over 50 people in attendance the event not only raised much-needed funds for the rebuild of Nepal after the earthquake, but raised awareness for the cause locally. There were also a couple of generous donations made on the night. Their original objective was to build a school in a remote village but with earthquake damage a priority it looked like the project would be put on hold. Those going on the trip are pleased to say that the construction of the school will still be possible and they will be leaving for Nepal on May 24. Looking for Nelson’s smartest, Wednesday May 6: Judith Tuckwell was overjoyed when two other Nelson Mensans came forward after reading the Waimea Weekly article last week, effectively doubling the number of Mensa members in the region. Judith says she had no idea there were other Mensans in Nelson because they were not on her records. There has also been more interest coming through from the Mensa website with around five people gearing up to test their fluid intelligence for a chance to join the high IQ society.

Local school bands get ready to rock

Waimea College pop band Goldthorpe will be hoping that making their Smokefreerockquest debut at the Theatre Royal on Saturday will be one of the best things they ever do. Goldthorpe is one of 20 bands and 18 solo or duo performers that will take the stage in the Nelson heats of the nationwide, live, all original, youth music competition. The Nelson performers are joining 3000 students entered in this year’s Smokefreerockquest that will be held over the next three months in 24 towns from Invercargill to Kerikeri. Although Goldthorpe has already had a dress rehearsal, performing on stage at school assembly, drummer Sophie Tasker says they are still feeling apprehensive about making their Smokefreerockquest debut. “We performed at assembly a couple of weeks ago to get used to it,” Sophie says. “But I stuffed up - I ended too early. “We’re really, really nervous about it but it’s a good opportunity to put

yourself out there and perform.” The band’s singer Rebecca Rea says they have written one original song for the Nelson heat and are working on a second. Lydia Dunne plays the viola and Zeke Smith plays sax, with Caleb Jones on bass for the year 10 group who got together after becoming friends in their music class this year. Waimea College also has bands Equilibrium, Escape Artists, UnKnown, Nocturnal Avenue, Quantum Shadow, Toxic Vain and DEMM in the heats, while Garin College has Vanguard and Lateral. Solo or duo performers Daisy Penfold, Tegen and Maia Holmes are from Waimea while The Gibson Girls are from Murchison and Corrupt Innocence is from Garin College. The top 10 bands and two solo or duos at Saturday’s heats which start at 6pm will go through to the Nelson regional final at Theatre Royal on Friday May 22. Tickets cost $10 at the door.

Tapawera craft group keeps students warm

Tapawera Area School junior students will have toasty warm feet this coming winter thanks to the knitting skills of the Tapawera Spinners and Craft Group. Creative Fibre is the New Zealand organisation for all fibre crafts. At their National Fibre Council meeting held in Dunedin last month, it was decided that members would take on the project of knitting woollen slippers to keep children’s feet warm in classrooms. All over New Zealand local fibre groups started knitting for their local communities. The Tapawera group, got on board to knit a few pairs of slippers with the idea of dropping them off at the local schools including Dovedale, Tapawera and Lake Rotoiti. The slippers have been so popular that twenty members have now knitted 120 pairs.

Broken ankle on courtesy crossing: It is obvious that they are courtesy crossings not pedestrian crossings. Many times I see pedestrians just walk out without looking; expecting traffic to stop. It does not take much to acknowledge the traffic by making eye contact and at times I have waved them on because I want them to keep going, but they stop anyway. So a friendly thank you wave in return ensures everyone is safe. Maybe signs would help, but courtesy means just that – we are too “over-signed” now! So much of life seems to be based around this question - career, friends, family, leisure, and where we live etc. This question could also be translated, what purpose do you have? How can we make such decisions that positively influence such a question when we, ourselves can not determine every future consequence of our decisions. If this is the case how can we know our purpose, or even be sure we can achieve our found purpose? I believe the key to discovering why we are on this planet, why we are alive, and what our purpose is, begins in knowing God. The Bible describes God as “greater than our heart, and he knows everything” (1 John 3:20), so he must have some idea about our purpose. In fact, God says “I know the plans I have for you” (Jeremiah 29:11). Therefore, as I endeavour to live my life with some sort of structure, direction, and purpose it only seems logical to consider God. However, this only answers the question of “What is my purpose?” Not “How do I get there?” Proverbs 16:9 tells us “The heart of man plans his way,but the Lord establishes his steps”. Thus suggesting that God plays more of a part in our life than just the odd prayer to make sure we are on the right track. John 1:37-39 outlines an ordering of steps “The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.” What we learn from these two men is that they simply wanted to go to where Jesus was staying, to spend time with Jesus, and to gain insight into who Jesus was and what he was about. They were coming to spend quality time with Him to listen and learn. We can learn from these men what it means to seek Jesus and have him order our steps. Seeking is more than just saying a prayer or one day a week in a church it is allowing Jesus to walk with us in our journey of life.

Warriors donate cash to kids charity Funds raised from the inaugural Wairua Warrior obstacle race held last month have been donated back into the community. The event, held at Happy Valley Adventures in Cable Bay, saw people of all fitness levels competing in a six kilometre or 12 kilometre obstacle course. Donna and Greg Witika from Nelson’s Wairua Body Coaching Systems organised the event, together with members of the Wairua Mud Rookies. The group wanted to give something back to the community and presented a cheque for $2,500 to the Nelson Life Education Community Trust last week.

The Witika’s chose the charity because they have seen first hand the impact that the Nelson Life Education Trust has on children within primary and intermediate schools. “It is great being able to support a charity for kids, we have seen Harold the Giraffe in the school over the years as we have children,” says Donna. Established in Nelson over 12 years ago, the Life Education Community Trust is a non-profit organisation that provides primary and intermediate school children with knowledge about health and their bodies, helps develop self-esteem, and as-

sists students with developing strategies for relating to others. The programmes take children on an adventure in a mobile classroom equipped with sight and sound, designed to make the journey fun as well as educational, with Harold the Giraffe as mascot. The trust educated 5299 students last year in Nelson and they are highly dependent on funding and support from local sponsors. “Life Education is all about the kids, health and nutrition, it is great to be involved with Wairua Warrior as it promotes living a healthy lifestyle. We really

appreciate their financial support, the programme’s operating costs alone are $17 per child and only $4 out of that is supplied by the schools and parents, so we need to find the remaining funds,” says Michelle Fitzgerald, chair of the trust. In addition to this, the group also presented a $500 cheque to Sean Tremlett, who suffers from chronic epilepsy. He will represent New Zealand in basketball at the Special Olympics to be held in the USA in July. The Witikas say they would like to see the Wairua Warrior event get even bigger next year.

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club The winter season is now upon us and if you have finished your fishing for the year there are some basic things you should be doing to protect your prized possessions for the next few months. If you are not mechanically-minded, the safest thing to do is take your boat to the experts and get them to perform a winterization routine on the engine, steering, and electrical components, and a once-over of the boat and trailer to ensure they are both safe and sound. There are things, however, that you can look at yourself that don’t require you to be a boat mechanic. Remove squabs and lifejackets to dry storage. Squabs and lifejackets should be washed in fresh water before being stored, as salt deposits will stop them drying out fully and cause mould and mildew to form. Take gadgets, fishing tackle, rods and reels, indoors to prevent theft. This is especially important if you store your boat on the street or a driveway. Check the expiry date of your flare kits and top up the first aid kit as necessary. Check torches, spotlights, cookers, toilets, anchor rope and chain are still in good working order. Check electrical connections for corrosion. Replace any corroded connections, and cover all connections with a corrosion inhibitor (CRC Lanocote works well) to prevent further damage. Make sure the bilge pumps work. Clean out any ‘gunk’ from strainers and float switches if fitted, and make sure your bilge pump works well, and your batteries can keep up. Turn off your main battery switch to prevent drain-down, or remove batteries from your boat completely. Make sure you keep your batteries charged – they will lose charge gradually, even when not in use, which will

reduce battery lifespan significantly. Remove trailer rust. A quick scrub with a Scotch-brite or wire brush should remove surface rust. While you’re checking for rust, have a look for any loose fittings, particularly on alloy boats, to help prevent rust stains and corrosion caused by dissimilar metals. Apply a rust-killing product where minor corrosion does appear. Check the wheel bearings and bearing buddies, but don’t overfill them with grease. Check the lights all work, the winch strap is not frayed and that the trailer brakes are working ok. A good idea is to put the boat in the water and give the trailer a thorough once over, as it is much easier to also check the rollers and inside the box framing of the trailer for rust without the boat on it. The last thing your boat probably needs is a thorough clean inside and out. Removing absolutely everything off the boat enables you to see the state of all your gear and clean it, throw it out or replace as necessary. Finally, cover it up. A good boat cover will help protect your boat from the weather over winter, not to mention the prying eyes of wouldbe thieves.

Fifty years of successful business is a milestone to be proud of and one that Woody Woodford celebrated with friends and family at The Stables last month; offering a chance to look back at the beginnings of Waimea Drilling and how it has grown into the respected, reputable business we know today. Around 63 years ago, Woody, then a Waimea-based crop farmer, was searching for water on his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s farm. The Waimea Plains of Richmond, Nelson, during the early 1950s saw some of the first irrigation systems installed to combat the drought conditions being experienced then. Naturally the dairy farmers and vegetable market gardeners started irrigating by pumping water from existing rivers, creeks and ponds that could sustain a reasonable amount of the activity. It was not long before shallow wells were being dug in the river flat gravels to obtain more irrigation supplies. Knowledge of the presence of water below the ground was already established by the many domestic water supplies having been found by hand digging a well or by simply driving down a 50mm diameter pipe which was perforated at the bottom. A successful tool for shallow wells but very limited on the deeper wells. Most of these wells were deepened at a later date by a cable tool drilling rig using steel casing and well screens. The first of these drilling rigs, of considerable size, came from the southern region of the country, having been drilling at dam sites such as Benmore in Canterbury. As Woody recalls, Taylors Drilling and Supply were the first to both deepen some of the older wells and drill some new ones. Other drilling contractors to visit the area during the 1950s and 1960s were Conway and Simmonds (AJ Simmonds Ltd), AM Bisley, Avon Drilling Co and Gore Drilling Co. AJ Simmonds Ltd became a resident drilling company in the Waimea Plains in the early 60s and drilled some of the first larger diameter deep wells for irriga-

tion. In 1965 Woody purchased a ‘Star’ drilling rig and the larger diameter well drilling equipment from Alec Simmonds and formed Waimea Drilling Co Ltd. The first well to be drilled by Waimea Drilling was 200mm diameter by 30 metres deep on Ross Nicholl’s property at Main Rd Hope. This well was fitted with one of the first deep well line shaft irrigation pumps in the area and has operated successfully for many years. Waimea Drilling spent a lot of time in the late 60s drilling irrigation wells in the Motueka area for the tobacco, apple and hop growers, along with many wells in the Waimea area for dairy farmers, mixed farming, market gardeners, and apple and hop growers. “In November 1969 Waimea Drilling Company Ltd, ventured over the hill to Blenheim to drill a well for Mr K. O’Sullivan in the Dillons Point/ Swamp Road area. From that time on Waimea Drilling established themselves as one of the regulars in the drilling business in Marlborough. His knowledge of drilling in this fickle terrain was important in the successful drilling of what remains the deepest water well yet constructed in Marlborough. “They drilled most of the deeper irrigation wells in the Southern Valleys Aquifers from the early

Also, many of the test or exploratory wells commissioned by the Marlborough District Council required their larger capability equipment compared to other drillers of the same era. While they continue to drill the occasional well in Marlborough particularly for Wither Hills Wines Ltd and other long term clients; it is fair to say they are not nearly as active as in their heyday of the 1980s. “One outstanding feature of the presence of Waimea Drilling Co. Ltd was their preparation of detailed well logs describing the underground strata and groundwater properties. WDC recognised the importance of keeping good records, and providing copies for the Council archive, not only for successful wells, but dry ones too. Church to host ‘Hopefest’ The Hope Community Church will be showing that is more blessed to give than to receive when it holds its fourth Hopefest Big Share Fair on Saturday. The Big Share Fair is the opening event of the week-long Hopefest which starts on Saturday and will feature a series of free activities and seminars at the church on Ranzau Rd. Thousands of items will be given away during Saturday’s Big Share Fair which senior pastor Donald Irvine says is always the highlight of Hopefest. The church started Hopefest in 2008 as a way to celebrate its first birthday and Donald says it’s a nice way for them to give back to the community. The church’s “family” have donated most of the items which will be purchased using Hope Notes handed out for free at the door. Hopefest will also include a charity

quiz night on Friday May 22 when the winners will give $1000 in prize money to the Nelson Tasman Hospice, Nelson-Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, St John, Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Red Cross Refugee Services. Donald says the three seminars cover a range of topics, including dealing with anxiety and stress and the challenges of living in the digital age. The seminars are also free and will be held next week from May 19-21 starting at 7.30pm, with no booking required. A concert with Elvis impersonator Mark Borg will be held on Saturday May 23. Tasman swimmers competed against the fastest young swimmers in the country at the National Age Group Swimming Championships last week. Over 540 swimmers converged on Wellington for five days of tough competition. It was a very successful meet for the Tasman Swim Club taking home six gold medals, two silver and two bronze over the course of the competition. “When compared with last year’s event,

the kids stepped up beautifully. They did a great job all round, they really did improve, rankings were better and their processes were a lot more professional. I am very proud of them,” says Tasman Swim School head coach, Andy Adair. Sam McKenzie won four gold medals at the meet and broke his own New Zealand age group record for the 100m freestyle race with a new time of 51.93 seconds. He also won the 50m, 200m and 400m free-

And that’s hardly surprising with Shuttersport photographer Chris Symes’ shot showing Bryce getting some very serious air time as he flew across the line for his first half try. “I didn’t want anyone to catch me so I just dived for the corner,” Bryce says. “I just wanted to go for it.” Although Bryce says he has been getting lots of positive feedback about the dive, he is expecting a bit of stick from his team-mates at training this week. “It’s been all over Facebook and got quite a few Likes. All the guys were positive about it after the game and they’re stoked it made the headlines although it will probably be very different at training. Bryce says he was already been getting a hard time from his teammates anyway because, up until Saturday, he was “just about the only back who hadn’t scored a try this season”. Saturday’s game was also the first time Bryce has kicked a field goal since he started playing rugby league last season. “I got the ball about 20 metres out and someone yelled at me ‘go for

Nelson Netball tipped off their 2015 season at Saxton Stadium on Saturday, with early indications being that the Grade 1 competition is set to be a closely-fought encounter. The draw is a seeded one, and it was only the club derby between top and bottom seeds Jacks Navy and Jacks Silver which created the biggest margin of the day, 4028. It will be interesting to see how the remaining six teams, all College teams, develop throughout the season, as it is likely

that they have not had a long preparation for the competition. Nelson College for Girls Senior B sneaked passed Suburban Blue 31-30, while the 10A’s defeated Rival Blue Diamonds 35–33. Waimea College 10A were quick out of the blocks in their match up against Nayland College A, with dynamic centre Jess Kelly to the fore. She played a strong defensive game, at times took difficult ball through the mid court, and it was pleasing to see her look long to her shooters and deliver precision feeds. Waimea played their best netball in the first stanza when they outscored Nayland

8–4. The three remaining quarters were all drawn to bring the final score to 23–19. Harriet Ogilvie was a revelation at goal attack as she slotted a number of long-range shots, so good to see a young player prepared to attempt them. Bailee Tava worked the circle well with Harriet, and was prepared to venture outside the shooting circle to offer a different option. Sheree Peters proved to be a worthy replacement at goal shoot in the final quarter when she converted four from four. Grace Young worked hard at wing attack to deliver quality ball to her shooters, while

circle defenders Maddi Springer and Alex Bloomberg toiled throughout. Nayland did not seem to gel as well, as they appeared to struggle with numerous positional changes. Nicole Whiting worked hard at centre to contain Waimea’s playmaker Jess Kelly. Taylah Kirker is a valuable asset on court in whatever position she plays and was sorely missed when she was substituted as she, too, looks long and directs play well. Once she found her rhythm, Tayler Boeyen was the most accurate shooter as she returned a commendable 75 per cent goal average.

Waimea Old Boys Rugby

Another Marlborough trip for Waimea Simon Bloomberg Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys remained unbeaten in the Tasman Trophy senior club rugby competition after defeating Waitohi 71-31 at Endeavour Park in Picton last Saturday. Waimea scored 11 tries, including a hat-trick to flanker Sam Winsloe, on the way to recording its eighth win of the season. It was particularly impressive at the break down where it secured a steady stream of quality go-forward ball and turn overs. “We have been working hard on that area all season,” says Waimea’s assistant coach Nick Marquet. “We identified it as something we haven’t always been good at, so we were very happy with the improvement we are showing.” However, Nick says it wasn’t a perfect performance with their biggest concern being a

leaky defence that conceded four second half tries. “We were ahead 31-3 at half time, so we loosened up a lot in the second half which was a little disappointing,” Nick says. “It’s something we’ll need to look at but that sometimes happens in high scoring games - guys get a bit fatigued and start falling off tackles.” Nick says they will not be able to afford any defensive lapses this Saturday when they play a strong Harlequins side at Lansdowne park in Blenheim. “Harlequins will give us a good gauge of where we are at. It will be another good challenge for the boys and we’ll have to be on our game to win.” Waimea leads the Tasman Trophy on 39 points after eight games, with Central second on 31 points and Wanderers in third on 28.

Waimea Old Boys’ senior B squad will head to Murchison on Saturday knowing its position at the top of the table will mean nothing to the hosts. Waimea held off a strong come-back from Huia on Saturday to secure a 23-19 win. That makes it three wins from as many games in the second round of the Car Company Nelson Bays division two club competition. But coach Wayne Bateman says Murchison are a tough team at the best of times and even harder when playing on their home pitch. “I hear they’re a young squad but down there mate, anything can happen.” Wayne says Waimea’s win on Saturday was a solid work-out with Huia making a

late play for the win. “They scored first but we came back well to led 15-7 at half time. We scored again after half time and really had the game in control but they came back, scored two tries and we just held on.” This season the team has a big squad to draw on which is a huge asset, says Wayne. “We’ve had five Tongan fruit pickers playing for us but I’ve already lost two and three are going soon, but we have plenty of cover.” He says defensively he’s happy with the team’s performance but is urging his players to show some more patience. “We need to stop throwing silly passes but in saying that we played against a really good Huia team.” Waimea play Murchison this Saturday with kick off at 1.15pm.

Wanderers rack up big win in Brightwater Taylors Contracting Wanderers are in third place in the Tasman Trophy club rugby competition after thumping Renwick 53-5 at Brightwater last Saturday. Wanderers scored nine tries, including two to wing Fletcher Matthews, against bottom-placed Renwick to take maximum points from the match. They had already picked up their fourtry bonus point when they went to half time leading 22-0, before finishing off Renwick with another five tries after the break.

What’s on

School Chaplaincy has been around for a long time but has grown in the last five to ten years. There are eight schools in the Nelson area that have a chaplain already with others interested. Life Walk Trust is the national organisation that oversees school chaplaincy in New Zealand. Local branches have a co-ordinator to liaise with schools, select and help train prospective chaplains to enable them to work at a selected school. A chaplain contracts with the school for four hours of voluntary work per week. All chaplains have differing skills and abilities and their involvement in the school will be to the extent that the school wishes to make use of that person’s gifts and skills. A chaplain’s main role is to contribute to the pastoral care of the school community. This can take on different forms, from running short courses on bereavement to working through conflicts and issues on a one to one basis, depending on the chaplain’s abilities.

Building relationships with the children and staff is very important as you can’t expect them to confide in you unless they know and trust you. I find going into the classrooms, seeing the children’s work and where appropriate helping them with it, helps to get to know the children and staff better. As I am only in the school for one morning a week I have set up a box for children who wish to talk with me, to place their names in. This way I can help the children on arrival at school. Many of the problems are to do with

falling out with friends but at times there are deeper problems that arise. These deeper issues often require the help of the school principal or others. I’m off to AAW Every community has their three letter acronyms. One used in Anglican churches is AAW. But what is it? AAW is an Association of Anglican Women. It is not only New Zealand-wide but also covers parts of the Pacific. It has twin aims. The first is to unite in prayer and further God’s work in the church and the world. The second aim is to nurture and support families and each other. We enjoy the friendship we have together. We also have interesting speakers and activities as part of our meetings. We welcome all women and if you would like to come along and spend an hour or two contact the church office to find out the details.

Planning for Brightwater and Wakefield’s future

Road Closures

The Council is planning for long-term population and business growth in Brightwater and Wakefield. To support this conversation with residents and businesses we have prepared a strategy and a draft plan change for each township. This stage builds on last year’s conversations with the community using those as a base for this next step in the planning. Within both documents we are looking to address the current issues including; • managing flooding and its associated risks, • more open space and walkways, and • identifying the best place for residential and business opportunities. Speed Limit Bylaw Review Tasman District Council is reviewing its Speed Limit Bylaw. The first stage of this review is to invite you to have your say about speed limits on local roads in Tasman District. Is there an issue with the speed on the road where you live? Are there other roads that you consider should have the speed limit reviewed? Send your suggestions by 4.00 pm, Friday 29 May 2015 to: Krista Hobday, Road Safety Coordinator Email: krista.hobday@tasman.govt.nz Or by mail to: Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond 7050 All suggested speed limit changes will then be subject to a speed warrant process and assessment where Council staff use a national rule developed by the New Zealand Transport Agency. The rule is used to balance the interests of mobility and safety by ensuring the speed limit on a particular road is safe. The speed limit must also be appropriate and credible for the level of roadside development and the category of road for which it is set. Speed limits must also be nationally consistent. The current speed limit bylaw and associated maps indicating speed limits on all roads within the District can be found on the Council website www.tasman.govt.nz

Rates Rebate Deadline The rates rebate deadline for 2014-2015 rating year is quickly approaching. Applications MUST be in before 30 June 2015 to be accepted. The Rates Rebate Scheme operates under the Rates Rebate Act 1973. The purpose of the Scheme is to provide a subsidy to low income home owners on the cost of their rates. The maximum rebated for this rating year is $605. Forms are held in each of the Council’s offices. These have a Rates Rebate Income Eligibility Table on the front. The property you are applying for must be your principal place of residence. You cannot claim a rates rebate for the rates payable on a property that is used principally for business, farming, commercial or industrial purposes, or a home that is not your usual place of residence.
